A Simple 3-Step Guide To Organizing And Maintaining Handbags

Handbag lovers usually run into the inevitable problem of having too many of them. Whatever the reason, it’s never too long before there’s that bag in the store window you simply have to have. It’s not a bad thing, although it can lead to some problems down the line, namely: where do you put all of them?

Realistically, it can be a bit hard to find room for all our handbags, due to their size and the fact that we already store shirts, pants, jackets, sweaters, shoes, and hats in our closets. If you can’t find it in your heart to sell or donate anything, there are many tricks to help you hold on to and preserve all of your treasures.

Here are the best practices when it comes to storing and managing your handbags. Bear in mind that if you happen to have all kinds of different handbags, it’s recommended that you utilize more than one of these methods.

Preserving your straps

One obvious benefit of handbags is their straps, which we can use for hanging our bags on empty wall space. While that may be our initial temptation, this isn’t a good idea in practice. Hanging a handbag for long periods of time will cause the straps to stretch out or break, leaving you with a potentially damaged bag.

If you don’t plan on only staring at your collection, one handy way of protecting handbag straps is putting them in reusable grocery bags. Instead of using the handbag straps for hanging, use the handles of the grocery bag. For those who’d like an open view of their bags, there is a similar solution, and that is to look into clear handbag garment bags. These allow you to store your bags in multiple pouches and hang them all up at once on a valet rod or on a door conveniently.

Preventing dust

Leaving your handbags out in the open will attract dust, and the highest quality bags should be kept clean and pristine. Cubbies can work well for bag storage, because they allow you to have easy access to your collection while protecting the back and sides from the elements. Store small clutches and bags that are used infrequently instead of your daily go-to ones in them.

Make sure to first put your expensive designer brand bags in bags made of cotton or silk fabric, as these materials allow the leather of your bags to breathe while being protected from outside elements. Adding a picture of them on the bag helps you know which one is which. More expensive brands like Chanel or Louis Vuitton come with a slipcover.

Retaining shape

If you’re not careful, your handbags can lose their shape from improper storage. Gravity will naturally pull the leather towards the ground, making it bend and giving it an unpleasant wrinkled appearance. To prevent this, stuff your bags with paper to keep them standing upright.

A safe way to do this is to put the paper inside large plastic zip lock bags first and then put those bags into the handbags themselves. This makes it easier to take out the stuffing later, instead of having to take our all the paper by hand in a messy manner.
