Are Custom Closets Worth the Cost?

We eat, sleep and breathe custom closets. So the intrinsic value in the cost of a custom closet is very obvious to us; but perhaps it’s not as clear to you as you go about pricing custom closets and explore various closet organizers on the market. Can you really afford one? What will a custom closet provide in return for your investment?

What distinguishes a custom closet from any other organizational approach is quite simple: A true custom closet is designed around you, to fit and store everything you want it to. How does it do that? Here is where it gets interesting.

Every organizational design is created around the inventory of possessions you want in the closet, the measurements of the area and how you use the space. But it’s the designer who interprets these elements in his or her own signature style. The result is a custom closet beautifully suited to you, often with an ingenious setup you never would have imagined.

If you have a particular budget in mind, your closet designer establishes a baseline with the sections as well as the features that go into those sections. Generally speaking, a custom closet will start at around $750 and go up to several thousand dollars or more, depending on many factors. Since the consultation is free, we strongly encourage you to meet with your designer, who will design a closet that provides the most value for every dollar spent.

These are the primary steps you take during the consultation:

Step 1: Organizational Design. To work effectively, the closet must begin with an organizational design. That organizational design accommodates your entire closet inventory. Every single item that must be stored in the closet will have rod space, drawer space or shelf space to house it. We design in sections, and the price of your closet depends partly on how many sections your organizational design requires.

Step 2: Considering Accessories. Our accessories are vital in a custom closet, significantly raising functionality levels and designed to work optimally with our closet configurations. Whether it’s a drawer with dividers, a belt rack, or a pullout hamper, our wide range of options increases the personalization of each closet design.

Step 3: Layering the Look. For the final part of the process, you have a choice. You can go as simple or as detailed as you like with materials, accessories and embellishments, depending on what you want to spend. We call it layering—begin with the basics, determine the best accessories, then add your desired aesthetic details such as molding, premium hardware and decorate glass door fronts, until we reach the result you want.
