The Basics of Organization – Part II

After a long day at work or running around with the kids, walking into a clutter-free and organized home is so relaxing and enjoyable, you will never want to leave. In Part I of the series we discussed how to identify and conquer your clutter. Today we will discuss how to find the functions of each room and how to get started on your path to freedom.

Each Room Has a Function
Identify the functions of each room in your house, then remove items if they don’t serve the functions of that room. For example, the mail piling up on the kitchen table does not serve the functions of the kitchen, so find another home for the mail. Your child’s toys don’t need to be in the office so move them into the playroom or their bedroom.

If you find yourself juggling an item from room to room, because it does not really have its own space, then consider throwing it out. To help decide if something should stay or go, use the following guidelines.

You should consider tossing out an item:

  • If you have not used it in a year or more.
  • If it is broken or chipped.
  • If it is missing parts and can’t be fixed.
  • If it does not fit.

If it is something that is in good condition but you still are not using it yourself, consider handing it down to someone who will. You have several options to consider, you can:

  • Donate it to your favorite charity
  • Sell it to a consignment shop
  • Give it to a friend or family member in need
  • Recycle it
  • Throw it away (if it is not in donation condition)

Remember to keep in mind that change is a good thing. As you move from room to room you will feel the stress and pressure release as clutter slowly disappears from your life.

Stay Motivated
Making the commitment to declutter and get organized can be a challenge. You are often forced to make tough and emotional decisions.

Here are some tips to get you through it:

  • Before you get started, select a reward that you will give to yourself once you accomplished your goals.
  • Make it a fun experience, play music, get the family involved and turn it into a game.
  • Ask a friend to help you in your house then return the favor at their house.
  • Just do it. Once you get started and complete the first room, you will see such an improvement you’ll be ready to do the rest of the house.
