Simple Rules To Keep Gift Giving Organized

You don’t have to spend a fortune to enjoy the holidays. Here are a few ways to have a good time without breaking the bank.

1.   If you have a large family, pick names and then put a cap on what you spend. Instead of putting a high figure on the cap see how low you can go! Our family decided on $10 and we had a great time. Here are some ideas for a $10 gift:

  • A daily paper calendar with inspirational sayings or even funny ones like the Far Side.
  • New stretchy gloves for a woman
  • New crayons and coloring book for a child
  • New “funky” cheater glasses for the grandmother that can never find her glasses
  • Holiday themed socks for that teenage girl
  • A picture frame for your grandmother with a particularly favorite picture already placed in the frame

2.   Instead of buying gifts for everyone, set the rules for all gifts being home made.

  • Homemade fudge
  • Handmade cards
  • Homemade cookies or cakes
  • If you are really handy, knit a scarf
  • For your grand kids, write a “history” of your family and include copies of favorite family photos

3.   No gifts can be purchased!!! These are gift certificates of your time…not money!

  • Babysit for a couple with young children
  • Detail your dad’s car
  • Agree to rake leaves for two weekends
  • Clean out the garage or attic
  • Do all the laundry for 2 weeks
  • At the holidays, agree to write out all holiday cards that are sent out

Sometimes, the most memorable holidays are those where you didn’t spend a lot of money but had a lot of fun!
