Hi! Ok, so you’ve decided to take “the plunge” into your closet, to make it a better place for mankind… or at least for yourself. Here are 5 easy steps to help you along your way to a friendlier and more useful closet.
1) Preparing to move some things on
Make piles for donation, friend(s), family, and it’s just gotta go! This way you’ll have a convenient place to put the stuff that you’re getting rid of as you go through your closet.
2) Create a place for your sentimental pieces
Lots of us have certain sweaters, tees, baseball caps, or dresses that we may not necessarily ever wear in public again, but still hold special meaning. It’s helpful to create a small place to keep these items, especially if they are not in everyday rotation.
3) Go through everything piece by piece, even your socks!
Now that you’ve got your “moving on” area ready, and a place created for your sentimental items, you’re all ready to go! Take full advantage of your current closet bravery, and go through all the clothing and accessories you own (yes even the stuff in the dresser, and the coat closet in the hallway). Most importantly be honest with your self about what looks good, what doesn’t, and if you’re really going to wear it. An honest friend is a great accomplice for this part.
4) Donation
Make sure you get the “move on” piles out of your house ASAP – so that you’re not tempted to dive back into them! Swing by a Goodwill or the like, and drop off your donations. If you have a friend or family member that’s going to be benefiting from your closet cleansing, head over to their place next to drop things off. If you can’t do it all the same day try to schedule it within the week.
5) Pat yourself on the back!
Good job! You should have a lot more space in your closet, and a much better idea of what you need in your wardrobe. At this point most people feel exhausted, exhilarated, and a whole lot lighter!
Don’t feel like doing this on your own, or perhaps you’d like a trained eye to help you sort the good, the bad, and the ugly? Then give me a call and I’ll be happy to make sure you come out on the other side looking and feeling better than ever!
