Studio 6: It’s a Closet Makeover

A sloped ceiling and multiple rejections were the seemingly impossible problems facing Mary Meirow and Gordon Kunkle when they finally turned to Closet Factory for their custom closet needs. “We have 23 feet of un-useable space,” Mary lamented in this Studio 6 special, and other renovation companies they had consulted just didn’t share Mary and Gordon’s vision. Though, Mary was steadfast in her attempt to fill the space with a stylish and functional closet organizer.

The couple bought a craftsman style home in Tigard, Oregon a couple years prior and had since been working tirelessly on renovations, careful to maintain the integrity of the home. Though, they had one room they were putting off – the bedroom, which featured a tricky sloped ceiling that couldn’t fit typical shelving.

The original walk-in closet in the bedroom was narrow and hard to navigate, which sparked Mary’s idea to turn this “un-useable” space into wardrobe storage. She was housing her and Gordon’s clothing in three dressers, the original closet, and various other hiding spots. And, while her specifications were vague – deep drawers and a space that worked with the home’s aesthetic – she new she needed a remedy for her storage woes.

When Closet Factory designer, Debra Dixon, came into the picture, she knew she was in for a challenge. She listened to Mary’s pleas for more closet space as well as Gordon’s concern regarding TV accessibility. Additionally, they had a nook in the corner that was essentially wasted space. There were several items to consider in the design and construction of this wall unit. So, Debra collaborated with the client to create a closet combined with an entertainment center, which perfectly utilized the awkward space. Mary and Gordon were able to store all of their clothing in the 23-foot long closet, with room to spare.

The unit is simple, classic, and symmetrical, complementing the architectural integrity of the house without suffocating the space.
