As a designer for Closet Factory, I absolutely love doing what I do! Just the idea of helping my clients get their dream closet, entertainment center, craft room, and much more gives me absolute joy.
I was born in Barisal, Bangladesh and moved to New York City when I was a child. I have my Baccalaureate degree in Hospitality Management and worked at prestigious hotel operations, such as The Ritz-Carlton and St. Regis. This has collectively taught me to always place my client first and to always provide genuine care and assistance in every step of my service to meet and exceed their expectations.
Some things that really make me different: I love to drift cars, I’m a Disney fanatic, and I speak English, Hindi, Urdu, and Bengali.
“We did our closets last week and are absolutely in love with it! Athya, designed our closet and it’s beautiful and so functional. Albert, the installer, was also wonderful and installed quickly. I highly recommend Closet Factory, the best company in town.”
“How do you first approach a space? In other words, what’s the first thing you think about when you first see a client’s closet space/storage problem?”
The first thing I evaluate is the overall space and how to maximize it efficiently while meeting the client’s needs. There is always an opportunity to convert unused space into a useful storage solution for my clients.
“What is the biggest design obstacle you’ve overcome? i.e. awkwardly angled walls, electrical sockets in bizarre places, big collections in small spaces.”
My biggest design obstacle was when I had to hide a water heater behind sliding doors. You see, the challenge was that the water heater was on an elevated concrete platform. Secondly, right next to it was a butler’s sink which again had its own platform – both different sizes! But because we’re a truly custom company, nothing is impossible! So I was able to design around the obstacles and tailor the system to the space.
“Since collaboration is such an integral part of the design process, how do you like to engage or connect with clients in order to help them realize their vision for a space?”
I always ask my clients if they have already saved any ideas from Pinterest, Houzz, or Instagram, and from there I try to create something that is customized to their needs. And if my client doesn’t have anything saved, then I discuss ideas and show them photos of all my past projects to hopefully spare some stylistic inspiration.
“How are you inspired by a home’s existing décor? Is there anything specific that you look for during an in-home consultation?”
I have always been a very absorbent individual, so whenever it comes down to design, I always try to incorporate the style of the home into my client’s space. I look for such things as color palettes and whether furniture is modern or traditional.
“What are some ways a custom designed home office can improve productivity? In other words, how does the right type of home office help people do business?”
For those who work from a home office, it is extremely important to have the right amount of space. Lighting is also very important, and supplies like your printer, keyboard, and filing cabinets must be easily accessible. There are just so many elements that can go into ones’ office, but the most important part is to make sure you feel comfortable in your own work space.
“What are some modern organizational trends, or what’s a trend you’re looking for?”
Simplicity is an everlasting trend. However and whenever possible, I strive to offer lighting and technology solutions to enhance the overall client experience. This not only allows an area to appear in an optimal manner, it also creates a more effortless approach to storage and organization.
Each of our custom organization systems is completely personalized and begins with a complimentary design appointment.
