Designing A Custom Closet Inside A Difficult Space

Beautifully designed custom dressing room

Closet Factory has almost 500 highly qualified designers who have mastered the art of organization – creating custom closet designs that are stylish, elegant, and transformational. Our expert closet designers not only participate in intensive and ongoing training, they are also able to bring designs to life with the latest materials, accessories, and 3-D rendering technology. However, one of the most valuable skills that our custom closet designers possess is an innate sense of creativity that is critical when called upon to solve challenging design situations. This same creativity is also important when collaborating with clients to create personalized solutions that reflect the client’s style, aesthetics, and unique needs.[pullquote]During my initial meeting with the client, I was told that she had recently completed a renovation and there was a space that was ‘left over’ for a new master closet. She informed me that there were a few odd areas in the space and that she didn’t want these odd areas to be covered up. She wanted to make use of as much of the left-over space as possible,” said Michelle Langley, Senior Designer[/pullquote]

Challenging Design Space

Recently, for example, Michelle Langley, one of Closet Factory’s senior design professionals from the Washington D.C. area, combined of her training and creativity to create beautiful custom closet designs as part of a major home remodeling job. Specifically, the client wanted a very glamorous dressing room with finishes and accessories that would coordinate with her new master bathroom. However, the room had a couple of unusual shapes that needed to be navigated.

“During my initial meeting with the client, I was told that she had recently completed a renovation and there was a space that was ‘left over’ for a new master closet. She informed me that there were a few odd areas in the space and that she didn’t want these odd areas to be covered up. She wanted to make use of as much of the left-over space as possible,” said Michelle.

The unique space actually had two very unusual shapes where Michelle had to demonstrate significant creativity.

  1. First, there was a very deep and narrow recessed corner that created some challenges.
  2. The second was an unusual four-angled corner with both a ceiling and wall soffit.

“Figuring out solutions for this corner was by far the biggest challenge of this project. I love a challenge, especially when it comes to space planning, and this space certainly was a challenge. But with some brain-storming and a little help from our installers and production manager, I was able to come up with some great custom closet designs ,” said Michelle.

Solving Two Design Challenges

Michelle solved the first challenge by converting the deep and narrow space into double-hanging cabinet where out-of-season clothing could be placed in the rear, while current clothing and long hanging articles could be hung in the front. She also included a tall mirrored cabinet door to add usability to the space.

The second challenge was solved by designing a deep cabinet that was placed back into the multi-angled corner where she designed an additional long hanging space. The upper section was built to fit perfectly around the ceiling soffit while also looking identical to the cabinet on the opposite side.

According to Michelle, the closet was fabricated out of white Melamine with solid wood painted door/drawer faces and moldings. In addition, she added the following custom designed elements to the custom walk-in closet:

  • Fluted Pilasters that accented the drawer cabinet focal wall
  • Mirrored doors and backing to help bounce light around the room and make the space feel open and roomy
  • Carrera marble countertop
  • Crystal and Chrome knobs
  • Chrome Drawer Pulls

Finally, she included a custom drawer for sunglasses as well as a double decker drawer for jewelry storage and angled shoe shelves.

“I get such satisfaction in seeing my custom closet designs come to life whether it is a simple closet or an intricate home office. This is one of the main reason I love working for Closet Factory. We do so much more than just closets, and every project is different.

A Natural Designer

Designing is nothing new to Michelle. She actually received a degree in Graphic Design, and began her career creating logos, signage, and vehicle graphics. Eventually, she started working for a company that did interior design projects, and so she found herself designing displays, built-ins, and even custom furniture. When she realized that Closet Factory was the only company doing truly custom closet designs, she joined the Washington D.C. Closet Factory team and has become one of the office’s most creative designers who clients love to work with.

Highest Client Compliment

When Michelle completed the job, her client was beyond thrilled.

“My closet design and the finished product far exceeded my expectations! My jaw drops each and every time I enter my closet. I never get tired of it! The finished product is exactly the aesthetic look that I wanted to capture. Michelle nailed it on every dimension. I couldn’t be happier,” said her client, Tricia B.
