Who Wears More of Their Clothes? Men vs Women

When it comes to men vs women, the difference between their closets is common knowledge. For example, it’s safe to assume that women have much more clothing and a larger diversity of clothing than men do. In addition, women spend a longer amount of time on average in the closet and getting dressed.

Surprisingly, when it comes down to it, there’s another key difference between the closets of men and women: the percentage of clothes that are worn.

men vs women

When comparing men vs women, both are guilty of not wearing a majority of what’s in their wardrobes, there is a strong contrast in the percentage of clothes worn by each gender. The most quoted statistic is that women wear between 20 to 30 percent of their available wardrobe. Granted, this is still terrible, but men are even worse at an abysmal 10 to 13 percent.

We have an abundance of clothes due to many reasons such as not throwing out or donating old clothing, keeping clothes gifted by friends, and making regretful purchases. Unlike women, men are less inclined to combine their previous clothing with their new ones. Essentially, consistency and comfort is the name of the game for men.

Have you ever wondered why this is so? When you put it into perspective, men don’t receive as much pressure to change their image as women do, so most end up wearing whatever works best for them at the time.

Men who want to change that should have a supply of outfit pieces that go well with one another during any season. Sticking to neutral color tops like white, gray, and black and coupling them with a pair of black or blue pants such as jeans or slacks will create a nice and easy pattern of getting dressed.

Since unworn clothing ends up becoming closet clutter for both genders and unnecessary clutter increases stress, it’s also good for everyone to begin to clear out some space. Donate clothing you don’t use as much anymore, even the ones you always say you will finally wear. Organizing the closet into categories such as color or styles is also recommended. By doing so, it becomes easier to visually see what options are available and utilize more of your wardrobe.
