Do You Need a Bigger Closet … or a Smaller Wardrobe?

That’s the question that crosses your mind every time you stand in front of your wardrobe closet trying to put clothes away or deciding what to wear. You need more room, right? Or are you trying to fit too much in?

One important point to keep in mind is the design of the closet itself. Most homes have what we call the barebones closet—a hanging rod and a shelf that’s been a home building staple for 100 years. Even in contemporary homes, typical closet spaces are still designed for the smaller wardrobes of 50 years ago.

What we see in our clients’ closets today reflects a dramatic shift in the “average” wardrobe. Everything from the number of dresses to how many pairs of shoes we own has changed significantly, reflecting a new age of diverse styles and greater affordability. On the average, women own about 30 pairs of shoes—which means that some of us own 100 or more! We have fewer dresses and a lot more separates—shirts, skirts, pants and jackets—than in generations past. We maintain wardrobes for work, working out and going out. Times have changed, but our closets have not.

So what do you do about it?

We’ve put together a little closet challenge to help you figure things out. Your answers to the questions could reveal some of the best options you have for managing your wardrobe.
