5 Must-Haves for Any Closet
One of the things I love about my job is that every day and every project is different. As a custom storage designer I get to create something magical for my clients and with so many options available I can design the perfect closet that suits their individual style.
While every closet is different there are five basic elements that should be included and it doesn’t matter if the closet is custom designed or installed DIY. No closet should be without the following:
Vertical space is one of the most valuable pieces of real estate in any sized closet. Most closets are built with just a single rod and shelf leaving a ton of wasted space on the floor and near the ceiling. Adding another rod transforms the closet into a double hanging system utilizing the vertical space more efficiently.
Belts and ties can create such a mess, they can get tangled or knotted and often get lost among the clutter. You can easily tame the mess by adding belt and tie racks to your closet. Another simple option is to add dividers into a dresser drawer to keep each one separate. This solution seems to work best with belts made from stiffer materials because they maintain their shape even when rolled. Finally, you can also have a custom cabinet built to keep your belts and ties organized.
Shoes can be a nuisance without proper storage. Consider adding cubbies, an over-the-door organizer or a custom shoe shelf, to give your shoes a home. This will help retain the life of your shoes and will save you the hassle of digging around for a matching pair.
The typical standard closet is built with a twelve-inch depth to allow for shelves and hanging rods. However, extending the self depth to sixteen-inches allows space for bulkier items like sweaters, sweatshirts and jeans.
Hooks come in a wide variety of shapes, sizes and finishes and they can used to hang everything from robes to neck ties. The great thing about hooks is that they can be used almost anywhere without taking up too much real estate.
